Vice President Hawaii Alexis Sumida is celebrating her 40th year of service with Aloha Airlines. She began her career in 1968 in the carrier's computer services department, where she worked for 17 years. She was then transferred to customer service, where she worked until 1999 before assuming her position as Vice President Hawaii.
As a member of International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, Local Lodge 1245, Sumida has served as the District's Committee Chairperson for Clerical workers for 30 years and has attended every District and Grand Lodge convention in that period.
Sumida earned a degree in computer sciences from the Honolulu Business School of Hawaii. She has also attended courses at the William W. Winpisinger Education & Technology Center in Placid Harbor, Maryland.
Sumida has been involved in organizing throughout her entire career. Currently she is working with the Delta organizing campaign, performing outreach to Delta Employees who work on the islands. She was also active with the late Steve Cooke in organizing drives at the American Airlines Reservations Center in Hawaii.
Sumida says "Since its inception, the union has always fought for its members. Carriers have come and gone, but the union will always be here. Organizing is the lifeblood of our union. We must all do our part to help it grow."
