District Lodge 141 Secretary Treasurer Victor Payne’s employment with United Airlines began in 1966 as a ramp service worker in Detroit. After his probation period, he became active in his Local Lodge, holding offices such as Conductor Sentinel, Auditor, Secretary Treasurer, By-Law Committee Chair, Legislative Committee Chair and Human Rights Committee Chair. He also served as Vice President of the Michigan State Council Machinists.
Payne served the membership in Detroit first as a Union Steward, then as a Grievance Committee member and Chair of the Grievance Committee. He was also the Strike Committee Chair during the strikes in the 1970’s at United Airlines and served picket duty with other members of his Local Lodge during the strike.
He became involved with District Lodge 141 as an Educator and later as a District Lodge 141 Auditor. Payne went on to hold positions as Vice President East (1996-1999), Assistant General Chair (1999- 2004) and currently serves as Secretary-Treasurer (elected 2004-present).
Payne has completed numerous courses at the William W. Winpinsinger Education & Technology Center including: Leadership I and II, Advanced Leadership, Political Education, Training, General Chair Skills, Staff Information Technology, Arbitration, Comprehensive Training, Financial Officers, Virtual Lodge Membership Training and Principal Officers Conference.
Payne says, “I do not believe that serving the membership is a 9 to 5 job but a round the clock commitment to their service. The experiences I have gained over the years have prepared me to better serve the membership as we go forward and do battle for our future.”
